Ceiling Fan Installation in Louisville, KY

A good ceiling fan earns its keep in Louisville. From June through September the air is heavy and humid, and even with central air running, a fan in the bedroom, living room or sunroom makes a room feel noticeably cooler and lets you set the thermostat a few degrees higher. In winter, running it on low in reverse pushes warm air back down from the high ceilings that so many older Louisville homes have. Fans also wear out: the original builder-grade fans in 1990s subdivisions start to wobble and hum, and the fans someone added decades ago to a Highlands bungalow are often hanging from a light-fixture box that was never meant to carry them.

We install fans wherever you want them — replacing a tired fan, swapping a light for a fan, or adding one to a room that never had a ceiling fixture — and the first thing we check is the support. A fan is heavy and moves constantly, so it must hang from a fan-rated box fastened to the framing; if the old box isn't up to it, we replace it with a fan-rated brace box, and where there's no box at all we cut one in and run the wiring and wall switch. We assemble the fan, make the connections, set the downrod for your ceiling height — longer for tall ceilings, flush mounts for low basements and Cape Cod upstairs rooms — and balance the blades so it runs quietly. We can add a remote or wall control, haul away the old fixture and clean up the dust and packaging.

What this covers

  • Replacing an existing fan or light fixture with a fan
  • New fan locations with box, wiring and wall switch
  • Fan-rated brace box installation
  • Downrod sizing for tall and vaulted ceilings
  • Flush-mount fans for low ceilings
  • Blade balancing and wobble correction
  • Remote, wall-control and speed-switch setup
  • Porch and patio fans rated for damp locations
  • Removal and haul-away of old fixtures
A note from around here: Twelve-foot ceilings in Old Louisville and the Highlands need longer downrods and tall ladders, while low-ceilinged Cape Cod bedrooms in St. Matthews and basements in east-end ranches call for flush-mount fans that keep clearance overhead.

How a ceiling fan installation visit usually goes

Check the Box and Wiring

We turn off the circuit, remove the old fixture, and inspect the ceiling box, its attachment and the wiring to confirm it can safely support a fan.

Upgrade the Support

If the box isn't fan-rated or is loose, we install a fan-rated brace box fastened securely to the framing; for a brand-new location we cut in the box and run the wiring to a switch.

Assemble and Connect

The fan is assembled with the right downrod length, wired to the circuit and switch, and attached securely to the bracket.

Balance and Test

We test every speed and the light kit, balance the blades to stop wobble, set up remotes or controls, and clean up the work area.

Spring is ceiling fan season in Louisville. As soon as the first warm, sticky days arrive in May, homeowners want fans in bedrooms, sunrooms and screened porches before summer arrives in earnest. In older homes, we sometimes open up a ceiling box and find old cloth-insulated wiring, a box held up by a single nail, or a fixture hung directly from a lath strip. When we find that, we replace the box and the worn section of wiring before the fan goes up, so it hangs from solid framing on sound connections. A properly supported fan makes a hot upstairs bedroom far more comfortable.

What shapes the price in Louisville

The cost of a ceiling fan installation depends on what's already there. Swapping an old fan for a new one on a fan-rated box is the simplest job. Replacing a light fixture with a fan usually means installing a fan-rated brace box, which adds time, and a fan in a room with no ceiling box yet means running new wiring and a switch. Tall ceilings, vaulted ceilings and stairwells need longer ladders or scaffolding and longer downrods. Fans with complicated light kits, remote receivers or smart controls take longer to set up. Plaster ceilings in older homes need careful work to avoid cracking. Installing several fans at once is more efficient than one at a time.

Neighbors often ask

Can you put a ceiling fan where my light fixture is now?

Yes — that's the most common fan job we do. We take the light down, check the box, and replace it with a fan-rated brace box tied to the framing if it isn't already rated to carry a fan. We make the connections, set the fan up on your wall switch or a remote, and balance it before we leave. If you'd rather have the fan somewhere there's no fixture today, we can add a new box and switch there as well.

Why does my ceiling fan wobble?

Most wobble comes from a loose mounting, unbalanced blades or a box that isn't fan-rated. We check that the bracket and box are tight to the framing, tighten blade screws and arms, and balance the blades with weights. If the fan is old or the motor is failing, replacement may be the better option, and we'll tell you so.

Can you install a fan on my porch?

Yes. If there's a porch light, we swap it for a fan on a fan-rated box; if there's nothing overhead yet, we add the box and wiring. Outdoor and covered porch fans need to be rated for damp or wet locations so they hold up to Louisville's humidity and blowing rain. We'll make sure the box is secure and choose hardware that resists rust.

Can you install a fan on a sloped or vaulted ceiling?

Yes. Many newer homes in Jeffersontown and Middletown have vaulted living rooms, and Cape Cod upstairs rooms have sloped ceilings. We use a fan with a sloped-ceiling adapter and a downrod long enough to keep the blades clear of the slope, and make sure it hangs straight and runs smoothly.

Should I use my ceiling fan in winter?

Yes, on low and in reverse (usually clockwise). It gently pushes warm air that collects near the ceiling back down without creating a cool breeze. It's especially helpful in older Louisville homes with tall ceilings, where a lot of heat ends up overhead. We'll show you how to switch the direction on your fan.
